The Myth of the "Perfect" Routine

If you open any social media app at 6:00 AM, you’re almost guaranteed to find someone showing off their flawless morning routine. The quiet house, the glass of lemon water, thirty minutes of peaceful journaling, a 5-step skincare routine, and a serene workout—all completed before their children even wake up.

Then you wake up to your reality: a sudden cry through the monitor, a scramble to find matching socks in the dark, and a day that launches into full gear before you’ve even had a chance to open your eyes.

1. 4 AM Gym Alarms vs. The Baby's Clock

Before having my daughter, I thought I knew what discipline looked like. While pregnant, getting up at 4:00 AM to head to the gym was hard at times, but I still did it. I’ve always struggled with sleep, so running on low rest was almost my norm—and to be honest, I thought that insomnia had secretly prepared me for the complete lack of sleep after giving birth.

I was wrong. The hardest part wasn't just the missing sleep; it was shifting from a schedule I controlled to being entirely at the mercy of a tiny human’s clock. Add in exclusively breastfeeding, and I soon realized how deeply, physically draining it all really was. The energy I used to rely on just wasn't there anymore.

2. The "Naptime Hustle" Lie

Social media will have you believe that naptime is this magical window where you effortlessly clean the house, fold three loads of laundry, answer emails, and meal-prep a whole food dinner.

I fell into that trap, telling myself, “I’ll take advantage of her nap to get everything done.” But the reality? All I wanted to do—all my body desperately needed—was to sleep right along with her. And just when I thought I finally had her sleep schedule figured out, reality hit again. Growth spurts, teething, and brutal sleep regressions would crash in, throwing her sleep all over the place and destroying whatever "routine" I had managed to build.

3. Micro-Routines Over Rigid Schedules

Instead of trying to win an arbitrary routine contest, I had to completely throw out the idea of a fixed daily schedule and embrace micro-routines—tiny, flexible anchors that belong to you, no matter how unpredictable the day gets:

  • Drop the Naptime To-Do List: Rest is not "wasted time." If you spend a nap sleeping or just lying still instead of folding laundry, you are giving your body the recovery it actually needs.

  • Flexible Windows: If your quiet moment happens at 2:00 PM instead of 5:00 AM, it holds the exact same value.

  • Accepting the Seasons: Growth spurts and regressions are temporary chaos, not a personal failure on your part.

The Bottom Line

If your morning routine looks like survival mode, messy hair, and constantly adjusting to your baby's unpredictable schedule, you aren't doing it wrong. Life comes in unpredictable waves, and right now, giving yourself grace is the only routine that matters.

Take a deep breath, close your eyes when you can, and leave the social media perfection behind today.
